MOFA's youth ambassador program open for applications

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's youth ambassador program is now open for applications, allowing students to travel overseas to promote the nation's soft power and conduct cultural exchanges, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced yesterday.

“The program is aimed at expanding their horizons and also increasing the world's understanding of Taiwan,” Vice Foreign Minister Vanessa Shih (史亞平) said at a press conference in Taipei yesterday.

Applications are open to Taiwanese aged 18 to 35.

This is the sixth year since MOFA first launched the program, she said.

Unlike the programs in previous years that require applicants to make applications as a group under the name of their schools, Shih said this year the program accepts individual applicants.

Also, each team will consist of more members. In 2013, MOFA selected a total of 40 teams, with each team consisting of four to five students and one school staff member.

This year, each team will consist of a maximum of 20 members, with a total of eight teams or 128 youth ambassadors.

Upon selection, they will travel to nations in Asia, Africa and Europe, as well as North and South America, for a stay of up to 21 days from September to October.

Those who are interested in joining the program should submit a proposal by mail by the April 8 deadline.
