TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has issued a yellow travel alert for Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province due to the potential for terrorist action, urging people to pay special attention to their safety if traveling to the region.
The ministry said that under the influence of the Jasmine Revolution, a string of riots have erupted in the kingdom's oil rich Eastern Province, while two German diplomats survived a shooting attack on their car while visiting eastern Saudi Arabia. The vehicle was reportedly burned in the assault, but its two occupants escaped unharmed with the help of a Saudi citizen.
The Jasmine Revolution, also known as the Tunisian Revolution, was an intensive campaign of civil resistance, including a series of street demonstrations that took place in Tunisia from 2010.
Some reports said that the shooters wanted to kidnap the diplomats in return for ransom and that the attack was not politically motivated. Foreign embassies in the kingdom have issued warnings on travel tothe region, the ministry said.
