Taiwan raises travel alert to 'orange' for Ukraine amid escalating tension

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan raised its travel alert for Ukraine to orange yesterday, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary trips to the Eastern Europe country and to take precautions during their trip, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said.

Under MOFA's four-color-coded travel advisory system, an "orange" alert is the second highest level of warning following red, meaning Taiwanese travelers should take precautions and avoid the area if possible.

MOFA said yesterday that large-scale protests have been staged in the country since November 2013 after its government rejected an accord with the European Union in favor of stronger ties with Russia.

The ongoing protest took a violent turn on Jan. 19. At least three people have been shot dead during confrontations between protesters and police forces in the nation's capital, Kiev, MOFA said.

The tensions could further escalate in the near future, MOFA said, and it is therefore urging its nationals to avoid traveling to the country and not to visit crowded areas of the country should they visit.

In case of emergency, Taiwanese nationals in Ukraine can call for help at the nation's representative office in Russia +7-916-837-6058 or ask their family in Taiwan to call a toll-free 24/7 hotline at 0800-085-095 to reach MOFA's headquarters in Taipei.
