St. Kitts and Nevis to mark issuing of Taiwan stamps

TAIPEI -- A ceremony will be held later this month to mark St. Kitts and Nevis' issuing of a series of commemorative stamps to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties with the Republic of China (Taiwan), Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The ceremony, slated for Jan. 29 in St. Kitts and Nevis, will be co-hosted by Taiwan's ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, Miguel Tsao; Denzil Douglas, prime minister of the Caribbean country; and Glenn Phillip, St. Kitts and Nevis' minister of telecommunications and post, the ministry said.

The commemorative stamps, issued by the St. Kitts and Nevis General Post Office, feature themes of natural scenes, economic development in the two countries, and the results of bilateral cooperative projects, the ministry said.

Each set of commemorative stamps includes photos of Yushan, Taiwan's highest peak, and Mount Liamuiga, the highest point on the island of St. Kitts; Taipei 101 skyscraper and Port Zante to show economic development in Taiwan, St. Kitts and Nevis, respectively, the ministry said.

Photos of a solar power plant and a tourist farm in St. Kitts and Nevis, which were set up with assistance from Taiwan, are also included in the stamps, the ministry added.

There will be 300 sets of commemorative stamps, with eight stamps in each set, the ministry said.

This is the first time St. Kitts and Nevis issued commemorative stamps to mark the long-standing ties with Taiwan, said Florencia Hsie, deputy director-general of the ministry's Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs.

The Republic of China and St. Kitts and Nevis have enjoyed diplomatic ties since 1983.
