Indonesian fisherman lost at sea rescued by local fishing vessel

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An Indonesian fisherman working aboard a Kaohsiung-based fishing boat, the Cheng Tsai Li, was pulled from the sea the day before yesterday by crewmembers of another local fishing boat, the Cheng Chang Fa No. 2, after the former vessel caught fire at sea.

The Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau (KCMB, 高雄市海洋局) pointed out that the crewmembers of Cheng Chang Fa No. 2 saved the Indonesian fisherman immediately after they found him drifting unconsciously.

The Indonesian, who was suffering from hypothermia, is under the care of the Cheng Chang Fa No. 2 crew, the KCMB added.

The Coast Guard Administration's (CGA, 海巡署) rescue team arrived at the scene yesterday morning and cooperated with Japanese patrol boats in searching for the remainder of the lost crew.

According to the CGA, the man was rescued at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.

The Indonesian fisherman said that he and his fellow crewmembers held onto a float after the accident, but that they were separated by strong wind and waves.

The CGA yesterday dispatched another vessel to support the rescue mission.

The Cheng Tsai Li departed from Suao Habor in Yilan County on Dec. 14 with five crewmembers, including two Taiwanese and three Indonesians. The vessel was discovered by the Japanese coast guard around Miyako Island. Part of the fishing boat was visibly burned but none of the members were on board.

Hi, my name is Arief Fadillah, Representatives of Indonesia in Taipei. I am eager to know and believe that this one of 3 Indonesian fishermen whose vessel caught fire at sea. If it is true, the three names are Sutarno; Kasnalim; and Riyanto.
