Taiwanese fraud suspect repatriated from Indonesia

TAIPEI - Taiwanese fraud suspect and wanted fugitive Hsieh Ching-wen was repatriated back to Taiwan on Friday from Indonesia, where he has been on the run for over two years, the National Immigration Agency said yesterday.

The 27-year-old was escorted back to Taiwan by Indonesian authorities, said Chen Ching-fu, a section chief with the agency.

Hsieh had fled Taiwan for Indonesia in June 2011 after raking in illegal gains of close to NT$1 million (US$33,389) from telecom fraud. He had been charged with fraud and falsifying documents.

He was arrested by Indonesian immigration officials on Nov. 26 last year after he was found traveling with a fake Indonesian passport, the agency said.

Taiwan and Indonesia had signed an anti-human trafficking agreement in 2012, allowing the two sides to exchange anti-terrorism, human trafficking and illegal immigration information, the agency noted.

It added that it would continue working alongside Indonesia to jointly crack down on crime.
