TAIPEI -- Taiwan is seeking to sign a bilateral investment agreement with the United Kingdom as part of its efforts to strengthen trade relations between the two countries, Taiwan's representative to the UK said yesterday.
“Our goal is to first sign the agreement with the U.K.” in an effort to pave the way for signing an economic cooperation agreement with the European Union, Shen Lyushun said in response to questions posed by Legislator Lin Yu-fang of the ruling Kuomintang during a hearing of the Legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.
But Shen also noted that it could take several years to negotiate such a deal with the UK
Taiwan is taking a building-block approach to advancing trade ties with the UK, he said, adding that the country will continue its efforts to seek UK support for a Taiwan-EU economic cooperation agreement.
