Relations between the two countries have been warm, given that Germany is Taiwan's largest trade partner in Europe, said Zhang Ming-zhong, head of MOFA's Department of European Affairs. Taiwan hopes that Germany's new government will maintain those bilateral ties, Zhang added.
In Germany's general election Sunday, Merkel's conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) won 41.5 percent of the vote, while the Social Democrats (SPD) secured 26 percent, the Left Party 8.6 percent, the Green Party 8.4 percent, and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) 4.8 percent.
