Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said yesterday that 45 suspects were taken into custody across the island last week, while 184 had been arrested by authorities in China, 19 in Hong Kong, and one in Macau.
The detained individuals are suspected of exchanging obscene photos and videos of minors undressed or engaging in sexual activities over two web forums. Many of the forums' millions of registered users, including administrators, are Taiwanese citizens, though the websites are registered in the United States, according to the CIB.
One of the Taiwanese suspects caught in last week's raid allegedly took part in sexually abusive videos shared on the sites, the bureau said. Authorities have identified the victim and assigned social workers to offer assistance, it said.
Law enforcement officials in Taiwan and China worked together to identify the alleged perpetrators through their IP addresses, including a Taiwanese owner of the sites who was hiding in China, according to the bureau.
