TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou will meet with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and return to his alma mater New York University (NYU) during a stopover in the U.S. city en route to an official visit to Central and South America next week.
Ma leaves tomorrow and arrives in New York on the evening of Aug. 11 (local time). He will stay for two days before flying on to Central and South America on Aug. 13, according to the schedule.
On Aug. 12, Ma will have breakfast with Bloomberg, whom the president had met in New York in 2006 while he was mayor of Taipei.
Ma will also meet with several U.S. congressmen, and talk to several U.S. senators over the phone, the United Evening News said.
A trip to Ground Zero — the site of the World Trade Center that collapsed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks — is on Ma's itinerary; so is a return to NYU, where he earned an LL.M. from its Law School in 1976. The NYU president is expected to greet Ma.
The president will later visit a major association of ethnic Chinese in New York. Such associations have traditionally been strong supporters of Taiwan, but one of them in San Francisco earlier this year decided to remove the R.O.C. flag from its premises.
During his stay in New York, Ma will stay at Sofitel Hotel.
