Int'l firm travel in Taipei adds NT$3.5 billion in 2012: official

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City said yesterday that the city has become a popular travel destination for international firms, as 120 international conferences, exhibitions and incentive tours were held in Taipei in 2012.

In 2012, such international events in Taipei attracted NT$3.5 billion, a 13-percent increase on 2011, Taipei city said.

Chao Hsin-ping (趙心屏), Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism (DOIT, 觀光傳播局) commissioner, said since the DOIT was established in 2008, it has assisted more than 50 firms from different countries hold incentive tours — in which a firm rewards employees with travel to other countries — in Taipei.

The DOIT plans travel routes for the firms, Chao said, adding that the routes do not focus on Taipei shopping but rather aim to help foreigners experience the “Taipei style,” which includes attending local cultural events or trying local vendor food.

Chao said the city government helped Facebook convene its annual Asia-Pacific executive meeting in Taipei earlier in January.

Chao said the firm held a dinner party at Huashan 1914 Creative Park (華山文創園區), in which night market-style stalls were set up serving popular Taiwanese dishes and snacks, such as pearl milk tea and roasted pork sausages.

Taipei will plan a “One Day Experience in Taipei” (台北一日生活體驗) travel theme for Amway (China) Co.'s incentive tour in March, Chao said, adding that the tour will include Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group's Taiwanese opera (明華園歌仔戲) as well as the chance to experience various night markets.

NT$2.8 Billion to be Injected in 2013: Chao

Chao said Amway (China) Co.'s incentive tour program will spend an estimated NT$300 million on accommodation in Taipei, adding that the city government is set to assist in organizing 89 incentive tours, conferences and exhibitions in 2013 for various international companies.

Chao said over 120,000 foreigners will come to Taipei, possibly leading to an injection of NT$2.8 billion.
