Political group to invite Aung San Suu Kyi to visitCNA TAIPEI--The World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD) is planning to invite Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Taiwan in recognition of her devotion to the democratic development of her country, the group's president said yesterday.
January 24, 2013, 12:03 am TWN WLFD, an anti-communist political organization based in Taipei, would like to present Suu Kyi with a medal to honor her efforts, Yao Eng-chi said on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark 2013 World Freedom Day. Yao did not give any further details of the plan to invite the Nobel Peace Laureate to Taiwan, saying only that everything is still in progress and nothing has yet been confirmed. Meanwhile, Yao said the international organization hopes to hold events in Beijing in the near future amid warming ties between Taiwan and China. Over 400 guests from some 60 countries and territories are attending the 2013 World Freedom Day celebrations and the annual General Conference of the World League for Freedom and Democracy and the Asian Pacific League for Freedom and Democracy. |
