4 Taiwanese telecom fraud suspects arrested in ManilaCNA MANILA -- Philippines law enforcement officers arrested 13 Chinese and four Taiwanese in a raid in suburb Manila yesterday in connection with a telecom fraud ring.
December 7, 2012, 12:05 am TWN “The bust was the result of long-term cooperation between Taiwan and the Philippines,” a liaison official from Taiwan's Ministry of Justice said. Bilateral cooperation will become even closer through this sort of joint crackdown on criminal activities, the official said. The law enforcement officers also seized computers and telecommunications equipment, as well as handbooks on how to conduct telecom fraud during the raid on a luxury housing complex. The handbook described how fraudsters can pass themselves off as police, judges or government officials in China, then coerce or threaten their victims into transferring funds to the fraudsters' bank accounts. Filipino agents said the fraud ring had been operating for three months and that it had been under surveillance for nearly one month.
