Dual national arrested for attempt to smuggle heroin

TAIPEI -- A French-German dual national was arrested Wednesday after customs officers discovered heroin in his luggage during entry checks at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

The suspect arrived at the airport on a flight from Hong Kong, officials at the Taipei Customs Office said.

Customs inspectors found 36 golf balls in the luggage of the traveler. However, suspicion was aroused when it was discovered that he was not carrying any golf clubs, the officials said.

Upon cutting open the balls, the inspectors found heroin parcels, each weighing 22 grams, for a total of 792 grams.

The man was handed over to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for further investigation, the officials said.
