Foundation grants Canadian activist Love of Lives award

TORONTO -- Taiwan's Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation presented a Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal in Toronto Tuesday to Marc Kielburger, a Canadian activist for children's rights and the founder of the Free the Children organization.

At an award ceremony at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, Kielburger expressed his appreciation for all people who spread love and said he hoped all human beings would care for others regardless of race and national boundaries.

Wang Kuo-jan, chief officer of the Taipei office in Toronto, said it is admirable that Kielburger, as a former Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Harvard and Oxford universities, opted for charity work instead of a high-paying job.

The Taiwanese foundation has handed out 214 such medals to people from 41 countries around the world since it began awarding the medals 14 years ago.

The foundation also announced that next year it would honor Spencer West, a U.S. citizen who lost both his legs when he was five years old. West has delivered motivational speeches to more than 100,000 young people worldwide, according to the foundation.

Craig Kielburger, Marc's younger brother, received the Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal in Taiwan and took a 10-day tour around the country in 2001. Marc and Craig Kielburger are the only brothers who have both received the award, the foundation said.

A 19-member delegation of Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation staff and media reporters is visiting Canada at the invitation of Free the Children.

The foundation is holding the “Send Love to Canada Charity Event Series” in Toronto through Sept. 12 and has donated paintings by renowned Taiwanese artists, including painter and sculptor Ju Ming, to Free the Children to help children living in poverty.

While in Canada, the delegation has visited Toronto Mayor David Miller and plans to visit the Participation House in Markham, Ontario —a residence for disabled people — as well as SickKids Hospital and the Canadian branch of Taiwan's Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation.

The Taiwan foundation will also give interviews to several Chinese TV stations in Toronto, including Fairchild TV, City TV, and OMNI.
