Taiwan rescue team stands by to help New Zealand

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's National Fire Agency is closely monitoring the situation in New Zealand after a powerful earthquake occurred there Sept. 4 and is ready to send a search-and-rescue team if necessary, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) said yesterday.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island early Saturday, injuring hundreds of people, destroying numerous buildings and disrupting electricity and other basic services.

After learning of the earthquake, the fire agency instructed its special search-and-rescue team to get ready to join the disaster relief work, the MOI said. The agency has been keeping abreast of the latest developments in New Zealand via the website of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the MOI said.

New Zealand told the OCHA that the situation was under control and there was no immediate need for international assistance, the MOI added.
