Discovery presents ECO Taiwan to Asia

Taiwan is launching a war against global warming. Without big budgets, the small island is fighting a battle with its greatest weapon ever — creativity.

For the occasion, Discovery Channel is joining forces with Taiwan's Government Information Office in producing a series of documentaries, entitled “Eco Taiwan.”

To be shown across 32 Asian countries, the films will unveil how Taiwan's innovations are helping to decrease the effect of global warming.

The “Eco Taiwan” series will premiere with the episode “Micro Innovation,” showing how innovators around the island came up with the idea of making some of the greenest gadgets on Earth.

Using wind, sun, plants and even human exercise as free energy sources, will showcase how riding bicycles or working out can produce enough momentum to make a freshly-made orange juice at the same time. For them, ecology does not mean breaking the bank; it just requires thinking outside the box.

The second episode of “Eco Taiwan” is “Wild Life,” it shows how local ecologists take the lead in rescuing endangered species. Over the years, Taiwanese bees, coral reefs and Formosan landlocked salmon have fallen prey to human beings' pollution. Now, the locals are trying to save them, breeding these endangered creatures in man-made environments before releasing them back to the wild.

“Green Architecture” is the last episode of the series; it shows how the traditional indigenous habitats conform to the modern concept of green architecture. Taiwan's tribal villages boast houses built with natural resources, such as stone slabs, which provide a cool and bright environment with good ventilation. Greening does not stand for blindly applying all the high-technologies; instead, the core of ecology is making the best use of local sources, bonding the natural environment with housing.

“Save the planet” should not just be a slogan. We saw on television that a polar bear was literally tired to death because it couldn't find an iceberg to rest on, it seems like Taiwanese people are trying to do something. “Eco Taiwan” introduces many of Taiwan's great innovative ideas to the world, showing how Taiwan takes action against the world's common enemy in its own way. The small island is apparently arguing that with creativity, the future could offer many possibilities.

'Eco Taiwan: Micro Innovation' / to premiere in Taiwan at 10 p.m. on Dec. 27, on Discovery Channel / 'Eco Taiwan: Wild Life' / to premiere at 10 p.m. on Mar. 12 / 'Eco Taiwan: Green Architecture' / to premiere at 10 p.m. on Mar. 19
