European Film Festival kicks off

The fifth Taiwan European Film Festival (TEFF/2009歐洲魅影) will kick off this week in Taipei, with 12 European films to be shown in free screenings at various universities around the island to promote European cultures and help local people find out more about Europe.

Starting from Nov. 30 to Jan.15, TEFF will feature films from Austria, Belgium, Czech, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, and England on subjects ranging from love and adventure, to thrilling and thought-provoking issues.

Among other films, “The Age of Stupid” (愚蠢年代) from England, is centered on the effects of climate change. The story centers on a man living alone in the devastated world in 2055; he watches a documentary footage of 2008 and finally realizes what destroyed the globe.

Another notable movie, “Beloved Clara” (琴戀克拉拉), depicts a love triangle among composers Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and his wife, Clara Schumann. All three were the greatest musicians in Germany then and their affair is filmed by the female director Helma Brahms, a descendent of Johannes.

The event, organized by the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO) and the Infine Art and Culture Exchange with support from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will give local audiences the opportunity to discover and appreciate the diversity and beauty of European culture through the viewpoints of European filmmakers.

The films will be screened in DVD format in more than 20 universities and cultural centers around Taiwan / Free Admission / For more information visits http://www.infine-art.com/eufestival/
