Updated Monday, October 20, 2008 9:36 am TWN, CNA Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu visiting HK to woo touristsChen, a heavyweight of Taiwan’s main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was accorded courteous treatment upon her arrival at Hong Kong International Airports. It was Chen’s first visit to Hong Kong since she assumed mayorship of Taiwan’s second largest city after capital Taipei. Chen will host a news conference today to introduce Kaohsiung’s major tourist attractions and a number of preferential tour packages especially designed to cater to Hong Kong holidaymakers’ needs. The Kaohsiung city government is collaborating with China Airlines, Taiwan’s largest carrier, and the Kaohsiung Visitors Association in organizing the promotional program to attract Hong Kong tourists. Chen’s visit was seen as yet another sign of improvements in Taiwan’s relations with Hong Kong and Beijing as well. When the DPP was in power, key figures from the pro independence party were barred from visiting Hong Kong because of its soured ties with Beijing over sovereignty issues. With cross-strait tension subsiding following the inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou’s administration in May, the Hong Kong government has decided to open an official representative office in Taipei soon. Chen will conclude her Hong Kong visit and return to Kaohsiung Monday evening. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here Related Stories |
