Canadian rejection rate for Taiwanese spouses lowest

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The refusal rate for Taiwanese applying to join their Canadian spouses is the lowest in the world, while southern China and Africa recorded the highest rejection rates, according to Zou Zhi-hui, an ethnic Chinese Canadian member of parliament (MP).

Zou was speaking about statistics obtained from the Department of Citizenship and Immigration (DCI) yesterday, and blasted the DCI for double standards, saying that the DCI put in place stricter procedures for applications from certain parts of the world.

Only three percent of those applying from Taipei were rejected, while forty-eight percent of those applying from southern China, including Hong Kong, Guangdong and Hainan were rejected. Zou pointed out that those applying from the Beijing office only recorded a twenty percent rejection rate, indicating different standards were being applied even within the same country.
