MOE donates textbooks to N.Y. bilingual center

NEW YORK -- Taiwan’s Ministry of Education donated Friday Taiwan elementary school natural sciences and math textbooks to a bilingual center under the jurisdiction of the New York State and New York City education departments.

Ethan Kuo, director of the Cultural Division under Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York Division, presented the donation of 23 math textbooks and 22 natural and life sciences textbooks on behalf of the ministry to Pat Lo, director of the Asia Languages Bilingual ESL Technical Assistance Center.

The Cultural Division said Taiwan’s elementary and junior high school basic science curriculum has received international recognition and that the donated textbooks, whose contents are “rich and lively, “are meant to be used as a reference by the center in helping to make New York’s bilingual education even richer.

The New York City education department’s Chinese bilingual education policy can be divided into two main categories: providing bilingual classes to new immigrant students to help them make a quick transition to regular classes; and offering non-Chinese students a chance at a bilingual education.

Currently, schools in three of New York’s five boroughs — Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn — offer dual-bilingual immersion programs.
