Taiwan officials to attend 2008 Beijing Olympics

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Cabinet-level Sports Affairs Council (SAC) announced yesterday that Minister Without Portfolio Ovid J. L. Tzeng, SAC Minister Tai Hsia-ling and Education Minister Cheng Jei-cheng will attend the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at the invitation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The three officials will be issued National Olympic Committee (NOC) cards, just like other dignitaries from other countries who have been invited to attend the Olympics, slated to open Aug. 8, so there will be no disputes over the status of Taiwanese officials, SAC Vice Minister Lin Kuo-tung said.

Due to China’s intervention, the IOC issued the less prestigious Guest (Gt) cards to Taiwanese officials invited to attend the Olympics in the past, which sparked protests by the Taiwan delegations.

Lin said that Tai will head to Beijing Aug. 7 with the Chinese Taipei Olympic team, while Tzeng and Cheng are scheduled to leave Aug. 8.

Tzeng told reporters he has kept in touch with the SAC and that the council’s officials will brief him on the 2008 Olympics so he can gain a better understanding of the developments at the international event.

Meanwhile, Government Information Office Minister Vanessa Yea-ping Shih stressed the importance of Taiwanese officials participating equitably in various international events, saying that the Cabinet has formed a supra ministerial task force to deal with various contingencies involving China’s possible downgrading of Taiwan’s status during the Olympics.
