Visiting French students give theater performance for locals

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Visiting French students from the Leonardo De Vinci School gave a brilliant theater performance yesterday, while attending Yungchun Senior High School's year-end party.

In their first direct contact with their Taiwanese counterparts, the group of twenty-four pupils from Paris put on an interesting play describing the fickle daughter of the Emperor of China, which received thunderous applause from the public.

The students, aged 8-13, are attending a three-week travel-study tour program in Taiwan, aimed at improving their Chinese skills and enhancing their understanding of Chinese culture.

They have already been studying Mandarin in France at the private Leonardo De Vinci School of Paris, which caters to intellectually gifted children ranging from kindergarten to high school age.

"Taiwan, we love you ... Taiwan is great," they shouted one after another in French and English to the 1,200 students gathered outside for the occasion.

Yungchun is the only senior high school in Taiwan that provides a compulsory one year program in French to all its students. The school is also engaged in various exchange programs with various foreign institutions.

"Some people think we are insane, but we are simply advanced for our age," explained Chloe, who noted that "gifted children think differently, that's all!"

"I am not good at all subjects," added the young Bilel, who stressed that French literature and history are among his favorite subjects.

During their travel-study program, organized in collaboration with Taiwan's Mandarin Daily News, the children attend Chinese language lessons in the morning and take cultural activities in the afternoon, such as puppetry, calligraphy, the game of go and kung fu.
