Aussie university's Taiwan program to be expanded

TAIPEI--Australian National University's Taiwan Studies program has received positive feedback and will be expanded to provide courses for both graduate and undergraduate students, Taiwan's Ministry of Education said yesterday.

Over 100 students took courses under the program since it was set up in July 2010 after the Canberra-based school and the ministry signed a cooperation agreement earlier that year, the ministry said.

Results of the school's evaluation showed an average 90 percent satisfactory rate of the program's three courses taught by Liao Hsin-tien, a professor from National Taiwan University of Arts, the ministry added.

The three courses — "Modern Arts in Taiwan," "Chinese Calligraphy: History and Practice" and "Taiwan: History and Culture" — have become part of the curriculum for students in the graduate program of arts (Asia Pacific studies) from this year.

According to Liao, assignments in his courses include writing English articles about Taiwan for Wikipedia, while students' works in the calligraphy class are publicly displayed at the end of the course.
