Coffee culture takes over Taiwan

The 2009 Coffee, Tea and Wine Fair kicked off on Friday at the World Trade Center with the participation of hundreds of local and international exhibitors, including coffee experts from Central America.

The annual exhibition will run until Monday, featuring coffee equipments and appliances, raw materials, roasting equipments, pastries, chain stores, specialty stores, as well as world-class coffee and other products from Taiwan's diplomatic allies Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Belize.

Asked what makes Nicaraguan coffee one of the best in the world, William M. Tapia, ambassador of Nicaragua to Taiwan, said: “It is the same as for growing tea in Taiwan.”

“We could make tea in Nicaragua but it wouldn't taste the same. Because it is about knowledge, the technique, the soil and more especially how you take care of the plants. All these factors influence the quality of coffee,” he added. “It is like raising up a child.”

With its tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons, he pointed out that Nicaragua is one of the best locations in the world to grow coffee, which has received acclaim from around the world.

“Coffee means for us what wine means for French,” he remarked.

For sure, coffee culture and knowhow is also integral to the local culture in other Central American countries such as Guatemala.

“Guatemala's coffee is not only of very high quality, but we also have a very well-organized and well-established business sector,” noted Ivan Espinoza Farfan, ambassador of Guatemala to Taiwan. “We are very serious about our coffee.”

“Central American coffee is your best choice,” pointed out Simon Hsing, director of the Central America Trade Office (CATO).
