Taiwan to donate 500,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine to needy countries

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan will donate 500,000 doses of influenza A(H1N1) vaccine to needy countries, through the World Health Organization (WHO) , Department of Health Minister Yaung Chih-liang said Monday.

The donation will honor a promise made by the government during the World Health Assembly held in May -- to offer US$5 million worth of epidemic prevention supplies to those in need, Yaung said.

He said the vaccines will be procured from Taiwan's Adimmune Corp., which has been contracted by the government to provide 10 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine for a free inoculation program at home that targets selected groups considered at risk of infection.

After the 10 million doses have been delivered by the end of this year, Adimmune will release more of the vaccine into the market to allow those who are not on the priority list to obtain the vaccine at a cost, the minister said.
