More int'l assistance coming in to TaiwanMike Coleman, commander of the Salvation Army Taiwan Region, expressed the Christian group's willingness to participate in long-term reconstruction efforts in storm-stricken areas in southern Taiwan, including Kaohsiung and Pingtung counties, according to a MOFA press release. The London headquarters of the Salvation Army will also send three disaster relief experts to assess what assistance it can provide, the press release added. Meanwhile, Taiwan continues to receive condolences for typhoon victims from diplomatic allies and friendly countries around the world, including deep sympathies expressed by Gambian President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh, Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, New York Governor David Paterson, and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. As of Aug. 20, at least 81 countries from around the world, the European Union, and 21 international organizations had donated a total of NT$160 million in relief aid to Taiwan, according to the latest figures released by the MOFA. | |||||||||||||
