President to visit Panama and El Salvador during trip

TAIPEI--President Ma Ying-jeou will visit Panama and El Salvador later this month and through early July on his 10th overseas trip since becoming president in May 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday.

Ma is scheduled to depart June 29 for Panama, where he will attend the inauguration of President-elect Juan Carlos Varela July 1, according to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Ko.

Ko said that Ma and his delegation will then visit El Salvador, which like Panama has official ties with the Republic of China government in Taipei.

Ma's plane will transit in Hawaii on the way to Central America and stop over in San Francisco on the way back, the deputy minister said. The president is due to return to Taiwan July 5.
