TAIPEI -- A Hong Kong woman shot in the face during a high-profile hostage situation in the Philippines about three years ago said Tuesday that she was “very satisfied” with the results of reconstructive surgery performed by a team of Taiwanese doctors late last year.
Yik Siu-ling said she was grateful to Taiwanese microsurgeon Wei Fu-chan, who led a team at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital that performed the reconstructive microsurgery aimed at rebuilding her lower jawbone.
“I feel good,” she told the media in Taiwan, adding that she has “been recovering very well.”
Yik was invited to attend a press conference in Taipei on a new series of documentaries on Taiwan's achievements in medicine, agriculture and industrial innovation being produced by the Discovery Channel.
She is one of the patients featured in the episode that focuses on Wei and his team at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital's plastic reconstructive surgery department.
Wei, among the world's top plastic and reconstructive surgeons, has provided treatment for victims of occupational accidents with severed fingers and patients in need of craniofacial reconstruction and other complaints over the past decades.
Noting that Yik is recovering well, Wei said the patient is expected to have dental implant surgery in July.
Yik said she is happy that she has been able to eat normally in the past six months since the successful surgery last December.
Prior to the surgery, she could only eat soft food like rice congee because of her damaged jaw.
Yik made dozens of visits to doctors in Hong Kong and South Korea before she finally contacted Wei, who gave her hope.
Yik suffered her injury in August 2010 when she was one of several people injured when former Philippine police officer Rolando del Rosario Mendoza hijacked a bus full of Hong Kong tourists in a stand-off in Manila that ended in a shootout with Philippine police.
Eight hostages and Mendoza lost their lives, and Yik was left with a fractured lower jaw bone after being hit by a bullet.
