Taiwanese textile firms in Vietnam reopen with tight security after riots

TAIPEI--Major Taiwanese textile companies resumed operations in Vietnam Friday after days of anti-Chinese riots over Beijing's maneuvering in the South China Sea forced factories to shut down out of safety concerns.

Factories belonging to Makalot Industrial Company (聚陽), Eclat Textile Company (儒鴻), Formosa Taffeta Company (福懋) and Tainan Spinning Company (台南紡織) were all running normally, though on high alert for any signs of further trouble.

Makalot announced that its Vietnamese subsidiary Triple Garment, which has shut down since Wednesday because it had “been affected” by the rioting, will resume operations.

Eclat said that it had suspended its factory out of fear for the safety of employees and only decided to allow production to resume now that the situation has calmed down.

Tainan Spinning's factory has also resumed round-the-clock operations as of Friday.

Formosa Taffeta, a subsidiary of Formosa Plastics Group, also announced that its factory in the southern province of Long An resumed work Thursday night amid relative quiet.

However, its factory in nearby Dong Nai has fallen victim to severe looting by rioters, who broke in and damaged computer equipment, the company said.

Though production is back to normal for most facilities, the companies remain on high alert and have increased security measures ahead of Sunday, when nationwide anti-Chinese demonstrations are expected.

Among the measures, Formosa Plastics subsidiaries have placed shipping containers at factory entrances to ward off motorcycle gangs.

As a safety precaution, Tainan Spinning Company has decided it will evacuate some 40 Taiwanese and Chinese managers to Ho Chi Minh City after work concludes Saturday. It will send them back to work only when it is safe to do so.
