WTIC cooking event reveals colors of Malaysia

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Malaysian cooking demonstration organized by the Welcome to Taipei International Club (WTIC) was held at the Taipei World Trade Center Club's 33rd floor banquet hall in mid-April, according to a press release of the WTIC.

The event was attended by Jasmine Huggins, ambassador from St. Kitts and Nevis, Ambassador Martha Chang de Tsien of El Salvador, wives of foreign diplomats, representatives and members and friends from WTIC who were dressed in the colors of Malaysia, the WTIC said.

The host of the event was Dona Sylvester Chuan, spouse of the representative of the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Center. The objective of the event was to promote Malaysian cuisine in Taiwan and to build awareness of the diversity of Malaysian food, stated the WTIC. It also aimed to generate publicity about Malaysian cuisine and attract tourists to Malaysia. Appreciation was given to Malaysian Tourism Taipei for the colorful decorations and gifts to the participants, said the press release.

The event started with welcoming remarks from Chuan followed by a cooking demo by Irene Yong, a Malaysian lawyer who has a passion for cooking and finds Malaysian food appealing as it carries influences from Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures. Yong recently launched her "Malaysian Favorites" cookbook on April 16 at Franz and Friends restaurant, said the WTIC.

Yong demonstrated two famous Malaysian cuisines, satay (skewered pieces of chicken accompanied by spicy peanut sauce) and rojak (Malaysian salad). Members had the opportunity to enjoy well-known Malaysian cuisines such as the Rendang, satay, sambal prawn, curry chicken, rojak and sweets served with teh tarik, which literally means "pulled tea," a popular Malaysian drink. The highlight of the event was the lucky draw and cultural dance, ending the well-received Malaysian cooking event.
