WASHINGTON--Taiwan's Deputy Defense Minister Andrew Hsia said in Washington, D.C. Wednesday that his country can contribute a lot to burden-sharing efforts under the U.S. strategic rebalance, or “pivot,” toward Asia and will discuss the issue with Washington.
America has been hesitant about including Taiwan in the policy that encourages its allies to assume a greater responsibility for regional security, but Taiwan will let Washington know that it is willing to share the burden, Hsia said.
He said he believes the proposal will interest the United States at a time of fiscal austerity.
Hsia made the remarks while attending a discussion on U.S.-Taiwan security relations hosted by the Center for a New American Security to mark the 35th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act.
