Over 40,000 Indonesians receive rice from Taiwan

JAKARTA -- More than 40,000 Indonesians have benefited from hundreds of tons of rice donated by Taiwan, according to Taiwan's representative office in Jakarta.

All of the 200 metric tons of rice have reached disadvantaged Indonesians in various regions since distribution began last November, the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia said.

Both the Indonesian government and the recipients of the aid are deeply thankful for Taiwan's charity, Taiwan's envoy to Indonesia Chang Liang-jen said.

Each of the 8,900 packages of rice carries the words “Love from Taiwan.”

Chang said the donation is an example of Taiwan's efforts to give back to the international community, as the country was itself the recipient of international aid in the 1960s.

Taiwan donated 8,700 metric tons of rice to 14 countries in 2013, benefiting 2.9 million people worldwide, Chang said, citing data provided by the Council of Agriculture.
