US weather service chief to visit Taiwan this week

TAIPEI--U.S. National Weather Service Director Louis W. Uccellini is scheduled to visit Taiwan later this week to attend a meteorological meeting in Taipei, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said yesterday.

Uccellini, who is also the assistant administrator of the weather service's parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will visit Taiwan March 20-23, AIT said.

In Taipei, he is slated to give a keynote speech at the annual meeting of the Meteorological Society of Taiwan Friday. According to AIT, his talk is titled “Taking Weather Forecasts to the Next Level: Linking Forecasts to Impact Based Decision Support Services.”

He is also expected to meet with leading minds in science and academia, including those from Academia Sinica, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the Environmental Protection Administration.

The visit “will provide an important opportunity for discussions on scientific and environmental cooperation between the United States and Taiwan,” said AIT.
