Former Philippines president Ramos to visit Taiwan today

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President of the Philippines Fidel V. Ramos will be arriving in Taiwan for a visit today.

Ramos' main goal for the visit is to attend a golf tournament held by Taiwanese merchants in the Philippines; he may also be visiting the New Taipei City Government and the Taoyuan County Government.

The Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei confirmed Ramos' visit yesterday, with officials adding that Ramos has attended the annual golf tournament held in Taoyuan in past years and will not fail to turn up for this year's contest.

The visits to local governments will not be scheduled by the Taiwanese government, noted the officials, but Ramos will reportedly be meeting several Taiwanese politicians during his visit, the details of which will be released when confirmed.

Ramos was the Philippines' 12th president and served from 1992 to 1998. During his term in office, he was widely admired by many in his country for revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the economy of the Philippines.

Under Ramos, the Philippines experienced a period of political stability and rapid economic growth and expansion as a result of his policies and programs designed to foster national reconciliation and unity.
