26 NTU departments among world's best

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- National Taiwan University (NTU) currently teaches 26 subjects that have been listed in the top 200 subjects around the world by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British social survey center that specializes in academic education.

The QS published the results of the 2014 World University Rankings by Subject yesterday, which listed the best 200 departments around the world in each academic field. Among the 30 total academic fields surveyed, 16 universities in Taiwan have departments that ranked among the world's top 200.

The performance of NTU is the best among the 16 universities. A total of 26 of its departments had been chosen to be among the top 200 subjects. In addition, 10 out of the 26 subjects were listed in the top 50 subjects in the world. The QS also ranked NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering in the No. 20 position, a record for a Taiwan university.

Director Li Fang-jen (李芳仁) of NTU's Office of Research and Development said that the performance of NTU improved this year. This is the first year that NTU's Department of Accounting and Finance had been ranked in the top 50, illustrating that NTU has also put emphasis in social sciences, Li said. However, Li also said the ranking is only a reference and NTU will keep improving itself in the future.

The QS began the World University Ranking by Subject in 2011. This year, the QS has evaluated 3,002 universities around the world. The ranking was drawn based on academic reputation, recruiter opinions, thesis citations, among others.

Other Taiwan Universities' Performances

In addition to NTU, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) was named No. 39 in the ranking of Chemical Engineering, while National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) was listed No. 42 for its Education Department.

The National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) has 10 subjects listed in the top 200, including Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences, as well as Arts and Humanities. Among the chosen subjects at NCTU, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Material Science and Engineering and Institute of Statistics were chosen as top 100 subjects.

According to the QS, the ranking shows that universities in Taiwan have improved in the past few years. In addition, NTU can be considered one of the top universities in the world from the perspective of the outstanding performance of individual subjects, the QS reported.
