China Airlines float wins award in US

LOS ANGELES -- China Airlines (CAL), Taiwan's biggest carrier, won the International Trophy at the 125th Rose Parade held Wednesday in Pasadena, California with a float titled “Taiwan Dreams Rising.”

The colorful float, which was 16.7-meters long, 5.5-meters wide and 10.6-meters high, featured seven hot air balloons rising over Yushan, Alishan and the Taipei 101 skyscraper. It was decorated with orchids, irises, roses and chrysanthemums.

The victory marked the 23rd year and the ninth consecutive year in which CAL has won the award since it began participating in the parade in 1987, according to Yu Chih, president of CAL's Los Angeles branch.

Lin Hsin-jen, director of the Tourism Bureau's Los Angeles office, said Taiwan uses the annual parade to showcase its tourist attractions and attract more foreign visitors to Taiwan.

Approximately 100 floats and bands took part in this year's Rose Parade, including the AIDS Healthcare Foundation float, which featured a same-sex marriage ceremony.
