The scholarships, NT$100,000 apiece, are awarded to students preparing to travel overseas for undergraduate or graduate studies. Among this year's recipients are two students heading to the United Kingdom and one to the United States, one to Australia and the other to Germany.
“The aim for the scholarship is to encourage Taiwanese students to embrace internationalization and share their knowledge and ideas with the rest of the world, while achieving their personal goals,” said Alison Devine, director of the BCT.
TOEFL had once been the most common English proficiency test for Taiwanese students pursuing studies in English-speaking nations. But according to Zoe Zhang, the Examination Service manager of the office, the number of IELTS test takers has been growing steadily in the past 18 years. In the past 12 months alone a total of 2 million IELTS tests have been taken, an annual rise of 11 percent.
To apply for an IELTS Scholarship students require a test score of at least 6.5. Short-listed candidates attend an interview with three interviewers and give an oral presentation on a variety of subjects selected by the panel. Results are determined by the content of candidates' presentations and their English proficiency and delivery.
The scholarship winners yesterday shared with the audience their passion for their chosen fields of study, all adding that they hope to return to Taiwan to serve their fellow citizens. Liu Kuan-chu, a prospective University of London student, won over the interviewers with her passion for drama therapy and her wish to use it as a counseling method for foreign workers and spouses in Taiwan.
“Despite how it seemed impractical, Liu's passion persuaded us that she is the right person to raise support for the issue (drama therapy) in Taiwan,” said Jonathan Klassen, one of the interviewers.
The BCT will be handing out more IELTS scholarships in 2014. Visit www.ieltstest.org.tw for additional information about the exam and the scholarship.
