Taiwan donates to Czech, Oklahoma disaster victims

TAIPEI--Taiwan has donated a total of US$70,000 to help with post-disaster relief efforts in Oklahoma and the Czech Republic after the two areas were hit by natural disasters recently.

Tornadoes that swept through Oklahoma in May killed 40 people, injured over 300 and destroyed or damaged about 1,200 homes, while flooding in the European country took 11 lives and caused nearly US$270 million in damage earlier this month.

Steve Hsia, director of Taiwan's representative office in Houston, handed a US$20,000 donation to Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin on Friday.

On the same day, Hsueh Mei-yu, Taiwan's representative to the Czech Republic, gave US$50,000 to Simon Panek, executive director of the Czech-based humanitarian organization People in Need.
