Airline finds US owner of camera that survived 8,000-km sea voyage

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- China Airlines said yesterday that it has found the owner of a waterproof camera which spent five years at sea floating from Hawaii to Taitung.

The airline said that the camera belonged to a woman by the name of Lindsay Crumbley Scallan from Georgia in the U.S., and that it has invited her to Taiwan.

A China Airlines executive, surnamed Cheng, discovered the camera while taking a walk along a beach in Taitung during Chinese New Year.

The executive said that although bits of white coral clung to the machine's exterior, indicating a lengthy period under water, its batteries and interior were not significantly damaged.

Cheng extracted the camera's memory card, which was undamaged, and was able to deduce from the photographs stored in the card that the camera had last been in Hawaii roughly five years ago.

Cheng said that it was a miracle the camera had remained intact throughout its 8,000-kilometer voyage.

Cheng contacted China Airlines' Hawaii branch, as well as the local tourism bureau and media, launching a search for the camera's owner.

China Airlines subsequently set up a Facebook page devoted to the operation.

The firm said that a friend of Scallan's emailed a news anchor in Hawaii after seeing reports about the camera, and identified Scallan as the camera's owner.

Members of Hawaiian media then contacted Scallan, and verified her as the owner through a video-conference over the Internet.

China Airlines quoted Scallan as saying that she was very surprised that the camera had been found, and that she found it unbelievable that the memory card had remained intact after spending such a lengthy period at sea.

The firm said that it established contact with Scallan yesterday afternoon, inviting her to Taiwan so that she could bring the memories of her Hawaii trip back home to Georgia.
