Pacific Island ally Tuvalu to open up embassy in Taipei next week

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tuvalu, one of Taiwan's Pacific diplomatic allies, is scheduled to open its embassy in Taipei next week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced yesterday, three decades after the two sides established official ties.

Willy Telavi, prime minister of Tuvalu, will be flying to Taiwan to attend the opening ceremony for the embassy, set to be held on March 14, Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs James Chou (周穎華) told reporters at a regular news briefing yesterday.

The office is situated in the Taipei World Trade Center's International Trade Building in the capital's Xinyi District, Chou added.

The soon-to-be-opened embassy in Taipei will be the fifth representative office Tuvalu has around the globe, after the United Nations, the European Union, Fiji and Auckland in New Zealand, he noted.

Tuvalu, one of the 23 diplomatic allies of Taiwan, is located in the southern Pacific Ocean.

Taiwan established diplomatic ties with Tuvalu in 1979, making it Taiwan's oldest ally in the Pacific region.
