MOFA congratulates new US defense chiefBy Joseph Yeh, The China Post TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) yesterday conveyed Taiwan's congratulations to Chuck Hagel after the United States Senate voted Tuesday to confirm him as the next U.S. defense secretary.
February 28, 2013, 12:01 am TWN Foreign Minister David Lin (林永樂) has sent a congratulatory message to Hagel on behalf of local government following the vote, MOFA said in a released statement. According to the ministry, Hagel was friendly toward Taiwan during his previous tenure as a U.S. Senator. He has repeatedly expressed his support for closer Taipei-Washington relations and stressed that the U.S. should adhere to the Taiwan Relations Act to meet the defensive needs of Taiwan. The ministry hopes that Taiwan and the U.S. can continue to enhance closer ties on national defense and security issues as Hagel is about to begin his term. The U.S. Senate voted 71-27 on Tuesday to confirm Hagel's nomination, almost two weeks after Republicans launched a filibuster to block his nomination. Hagel will succeed Leon Panetta, who is stepping down after four years as Central Intelligence Agency director and Pentagon chief.
