Local business leaders to attend APEC meeting in the PhilippinesBy Joseph Yeh,The China Post TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese delegation led by local business leader Cher Wang (王雪紅), chairwoman of HTC Corp., is scheduled to attend an APEC meeting in Manila later this month, a local official announced yesterday.
January 18, 2013, 12:23 am TWN The delegation will also be joined by Tsai Hong-tu (蔡宏圖), chairman of Cathay Financial Holding Co., (國泰金控) and Matthew Miao (苗豐強), chairman of MiTac-Synnex Group, (神通電腦), announced Catherine Hsu (徐詠梅), deputy director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Department of International Organization, yesterday. The group will be representing Taiwan to attend a first APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Meeting to be held Jan. 20 - 23 in Manila, she said during a regular news briefing yesterday. The delegation will exchange views with their counterparts around the region on issues regarding enhancing regional economic cooperation, promoting basic infrastructure and sustainable development, as well as boosting small- and medium-sized enterprise cooperation, among other topics. ABAC was created by APEC economic leaders in November 1995 to offer advice from the private sector on policy priorities and areas of cooperation. Up to three members from each economy are appointed to the body representing a variety of industries. Taiwan became a member of APEC, a forum for Pacific Rim countries established in 1989 that seeks to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region, in 1991. It is one of the few important international organizations that Taiwan is officially a member of under the name Chinese Taipei.
