Up to three members from each economy are appointed to the body representing a variety of industries.
Taiwan became a member of APEC, a forum for Pacific Rim countries established in 1989 that seeks to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region, in 1991.
It is one of the few important international organizations that Taiwan is officially a member of under the name Chinese Taipei.
