Australia paper lauds local economic success

TAIPEI -- Australia's top envoy to Taiwan welcomed yesterday a recently released white paper by the Australian government that he said recognizes Taiwan's economic success and its leading role in Asia.

In a statement, Kevin Magee, representative of the Australian Office in Taipei, said the "Australia in the Asian Century" White Paper released by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Oct. 28 recognized Taiwan as a forerunner of the transformation that is lifting many across Asia into the middle class.

As a partner in Taiwan's economic transformation, Australia has also benefited, Magee said.

The White Paper outlines a plan on how Australia can take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Asian century and lays out actions that can be taken to make Australia a more Asia-literate and Asia-capable nation.

"In this century, the region in which we live will become home to most of the world's middle class," Gillard said in explaining the motivation behind the paper.

Among areas targeted by the paper in which Australia can support Asian growth were high-quality services, education, exchanges among Australian young people, research partnerships in the biosciences, innovation in software and entertainment, Magee said.

"I look at our relations with Taiwan, and I see these rich and deep exchanges happening now," he added.

One example cited by the paper was the emergence of Australian game Fruit Ninjas as the top ranked paid application in Taiwan, Magee said.
