Nation can learn from UK about wind power: experts

TAIPEI -- Taiwan could borrow from the United Kingdom's experience in harnessing offshore wind power, as both countries are striving for energy security as a result of limited natural resources, foreign and local experts said yesterday.

As some of the world's best potential sites for offshore wind farms are located in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan should endeavor to develop this form of renewable energy, said Hu Ssu-yuan, an engineer from the Taipei-based Industrial Technology Research Institute.

Currently heading a project titled "A Thousand Wind Turbines," Hu said the institute is working with the government to install more than 1,000 onshore and offshore turbines by 2030.

These installations are expected to have generated some 4,200 megawatts of electricity by then, as part of Taiwan's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by introducing renewable energy, Hu said.
