Culture minister hopes to boost France exchanges

TAIPEI -- Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai told visiting former French Culture Minister Catherine Tasca yesterday that she hopes Taiwan and France can increase exchanges among writers and scholars.

Noting the close cooperation between Taiwan and France in the cultural field, Lung told the former French minister that she hopes to expand cooperation from the performing arts sector to include literary and scholarly exchanges in the future.

She added that the history of France can serve as an inspiration for Taiwan-China relations, pointing out France used to be an enemy of Germany but is now a friend.

Tasca responded by saying that she also hopes France and Taiwan can expand their interactions to the fields of literature and academia.

Tasca, a member of the French Senate and chairwoman of the Senate's Franco-Taiwan Friendship Group, served as culture minister in France from 2000 to 2002.

The former minister came to Taiwan to attend the country's National Day celebrations.
