New representative office to be opened in Chennai

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced yesterday that Frank Lin (林明誠), deputy director-general of the ministry's Department of Economic and Trade Affairs, will head Taiwan's representative office in Chennai, India.

Lin will be responsible for strengthening economic ties between Taiwan and India, the MOFA said. The Chennai office will begin operations once Lin takes his position, it said.

Taiwan obtained consent from the Indian government last December to set up a second representative office in the country in the southern city of Chennai, according to the MOFA.

The new Chennai office was set up to complement the work of Taiwan's representative office in New Delhi, providing services and assistance to Taiwanese businesspeople, students and tourists in southern India, the MOFA said.

Meanwhile, the ministry also announced yesterday that deputy spokesman Steve Hsia (夏季昌) was promoted to the position of MOFA spokesman after his predecessor James Chang was chosen as the country's new ambassador to St. Lucia.
