Waiver of visa fee for visitors to Chile beginsThe Chilean Trade Office in Taipei on Dec. 6 formally notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) that Chile will issue visas to Taiwan tourists free of charge starting from Jan. 1, 2012, the Central News Agency reported. In return, the MOFA has also notified the Chilean Trade Office that starting from the same day, tourists from the South American country will also be given free visas, the CNA said. The MOFA noted that Chile is the fourth biggest economy in the Central and South American region, lagging only Brazil Mexico, and Argentina. Chile is also the only Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member from South America, the MOFA pointed out. It is also a member of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, in which Taiwan plays a part, the MOFA said, adding that Chile is politically, economically, militarily and culturally influential in Latin America. Chile is Taiwan's third biggest trade partner in Latin America, with bilateral trade totaling more than US$2.43 billion in 2010, the MOFA said. | |||||||||||||
