S. Korean official urges greater trade expansion

TAIPEI--Taiwan and South Korea should strengthen their cooperation in the fields of tourism and aviation, aside from other forms of trade expansion, a South Korean diplomat said in Taipei yesterday.

In his opening remarks at the 20th Taipei-Seoul Forum, Representative Chung Sang-ki of the Korean Mission in Taipei lauded Taiwan's development over the years and said that its economic interaction with South Korea has been growing satisfactorily.

Taiwan and South Korea are currently each other's fifth-largest trading partners and bilateral trade is targeted to increase 25 percent in 2011, Chung said.

However, he also said the two countries should engage in more activities outside their traditional economic and trade channels.

Areas such as mutual investment, international bidding, aviation and tourism are those that are most in need of more collaborative efforts. Exchanges of leaders from various sectors should also be promoted, he added.

“We can also share our knowledge about how to cope with the current international financial crisis,” the diplomat said.
