Ma expounds strategies in talks with US think tankIn his 18-minute speech in the teleconference with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) , Ma elaborated on Taiwan's strategies to promote national development and security by “making peace with China, maintaining close partnerships with America and remaining friendly to Japan,” Fan Chiang said. Moreover, he said, Ma recounted the progress in Taiwan-U.S. relations and Taiwan-China engagements over the three years since he took office. Ma's speech also conveyed the message that Taiwan is determined to pursue a pragmatic security strategy, act as a responsible stakeholder in the international community, strengthen both its hard and soft power and safeguard its constitutional democracy. According to Fan Chiang, Ma told his audience that upholding the Constitution of the Republic of China (Taiwan's formal title) is the best strategy to maintain the status quo in relations across the Taiwan Strait. | |||||||||||||
